Our Story

Built on Legacy.
Driven by Craft.

The Chamberlin family has been building a lasting reputation in Northern Virginia for many, many generations — long before most of the region looked anything like it does today. Taylor's great-grandfather ran an electrical supply house in Clarendon, Virginia, alongside the father of Warren Beatty. From there, T. Barrett "Buck" Chamberlin Sr. led Delashmutt Associates, a respected land use and land planning firm, developing a professional fluency in how land gets entitled, planned, and developed.

In the late 1980s, Buck and his son T. Barrett "Barry" Chamberlin Jr. co-founded The Barrett Companies — and have since delivered well over $200 million in upper-end homes, custom residences, multifamily projects, and commercial developments across Northern Virginia. Barry remains Founder & CEO today.

Now Taylor Barrett Chamberlin leads as President alongside his brothers Milton and Brad — and Barry is still very much in the mix. Growing up, one phrase was repeated so often it became the family's creed: "You're building a reputation, not a business." All three brothers still live by it.

"You're building a reputation, not a business — and reputation always comes before profit."
No corners cut. Ever.
Taylor vividly remembers riding through neighborhoods with his dad Barry and grandfather Buck, looking at completed projects — the pride they had in every one of them. That same pride drives every Barrett decision today.
Planning expertise most builders don't have
Our roots in professional land use and land planning mean we approach every site with a depth of understanding that goes far beyond construction — from lot selection to entitlements to final finishes.
A family business, not a corporation
When you work with Barrett, you're working with Taylor, Milton, Brad, and Barry. Not a project manager you've never met. The Chamberlin family's name is on every home we build — and that changes everything.
Deep Roots

A Family Built
Into This Community.

The Barrett Companies didn't start in 1987. The Chamberlin family has been building a lasting reputation in Northern Virginia for many, many generations.

Generations Deep  ·  Clarendon, VA
The Electrical Supply House

The Chamberlin family's construction roots in Northern Virginia run deep — long before most of the region looked anything like it does today. Taylor's great-grandfather ran an electrical supply house in Clarendon, Virginia, alongside the father of Warren Beatty. Northern Virginia was their home, their community, and their business long before The Barrett Companies existed.

Professional Land Use & Planning
T. Barrett "Buck" Chamberlin Sr.

Buck led Delashmutt Associates, a respected land use and land planning firm. The family developed a professional fluency in how land gets entitled, planned, and developed — knowledge that would prove invaluable when the next generation entered real estate development.

Est. 1987  ·  The Company is Born
T. Barrett "Buck" Chamberlin Sr. & T. Barrett "Barry" Chamberlin Jr.

Father and son co-founded The Barrett Companies in the late 1980s. Buck brought his land planning expertise from Delashmutt Associates. Barry brought the vision. Together they built a company that has since delivered well over $200 million in upper-end homes, custom residences, multifamily projects, and commercial developments across Northern Virginia. Barry remains Founder & CEO today.

Today  ·  The Next Generation
Taylor, Milton & Brad Chamberlin

Taylor Barrett Chamberlin leads as President, Milton Chamberlin as Partner, and Brad Chamberlin oversees all field operations and project management as VP of Field Operations — with their father Barry still very much in the mix as Founder & CEO. Three brothers, their dad, and Buck's legacy behind them. The same creed runs through all of it: you're building a reputation, not a business.

Not All New Construction Is Equal

The Only Multi-Generational
Builder in Northern Virginia.

There's a widespread assumption in the market that new construction is new construction — that one freshly built home is essentially the same as another. It is not. And there's a reason The Barrett Companies is the only multi-generational builder operating in this market: most builders don't last long enough to build that kind of legacy, because they don't build to that kind of standard.

We do the right thing on every project, no matter what it costs us. That's not marketing language — it's the standard Barry set in 1987, the standard Buck held him to, and the standard Taylor, Milton, and Brad refuse to compromise on today.

Site selection and land planning expertise
Most builders buy lots. We evaluate them the way a land planner does — drainage, orientation, setbacks, future development patterns, resale characteristics. That background, passed down from Delashmutt Associates, means our lots are chosen better before a shovel goes in the ground.
Structural integrity that outlasts warranties
We don't build to pass inspection. We build to the standard we'd want in our own homes. Framing, insulation, mechanicals, waterproofing — every system is done correctly the first time, because fixing it later costs the homeowner far more than doing it right now costs us.
Generational homes, not commodity houses
A Barrett home is built to be passed down. The finishes, the systems, the bones of the structure — they're selected with 30-year ownership in mind, not a 12-month sales cycle. Our clients feel that difference the day they move in and for every year after.
We do the right thing. No matter what it costs.
Every builder says they have high standards. We can point to over three decades and $200 million in projects and let the work speak for itself. When something needs to be done correctly — even when no one would notice if it wasn't — we do it correctly. That's what "building a reputation" actually means.
The only multi-generational builder in Northern Virginia
Multi-generational businesses are rare because they're hard to sustain. They require a consistent standard of quality, integrity, and client relationships that compounds over time. The Chamberlin family has sustained that across generations in one of the most competitive real estate markets in the country. That fact alone tells you something.

The People Behind the Work

Meet the Barrett Team

When you hire The Barrett Companies, you're not hiring a corporation — you're hiring a family that has staked its name on every project for four generations. We're your neighbors, and this is our community too.

The Barrett Companies Team
The Chamberlin Family
Built on Trust. Built to Last.

Four generations of the Chamberlin family have staked the Barrett name on every home we build. Taylor, Brad, and Milton grew up on job sites — not as kids watching from the sidelines, but as part of the work. Their father Barry built this company alongside his own father Buck, and the values haven't changed since day one: craft over shortcuts, relationships over transactions, and reputation above all else.

Taylor Chamberlin
Taylor Barrett Chamberlin
President
T. Barrett · President since 2022

Taylor Chamberlin serves as President of The Barrett Companies, helping lead the next generation of a fourth-generation family building and development business rooted in Northern Virginia. Working across development, custom homes, and Barrett Design + Build, Taylor is focused on carrying Barrett's legacy forward while building a more disciplined, scalable, and execution-focused company. He brings a relationship-driven approach to growth, project leadership, and client partnerships, with a deep respect for the craftsmanship, quality, and trust that have defined the Chamberlin family's work for decades. Taylor lives in Great Falls with his wife, Emily, their three children, and their two German Shorthaired Pointers. Outside of work, he enjoys competitive golf, hunting, and spending time outdoors with his family.

Milton Chamberlin
Milton Chamberlin
Partner & Director of Land Use
Next Generation

Milton has followed in his father Barry's footsteps, mastering the art and science of land use and land planning. He manages all county interactions, permitting, and civil plan creation for Barrett — the behind-the-scenes expertise that keeps projects moving and means nothing catches us off guard at the entitlement table.

Brad Chamberlin
Brad Chamberlin
VP of Field Operations
Next Generation

Bradshaw Chamberlin leads Barrett Design + Build, the renovation and remodeling arm of The Barrett Companies. With more than 12 years of experience in residential renovation, real estate, and property improvement, Brad brings a practical, hands-on approach to helping clients improve the way their homes look, live, and function. His work spans everything from thoughtful home upgrades and major renovations to commercial tenant buildouts, and his background in both construction and real estate helps clients make smart, value-driven decisions while keeping each project focused on quality, budget, and long-term results. Known for his steady communication and attention to detail, Brad lives in Northern Virginia and is proud to be part of the next generation of the Chamberlin family's building legacy.

Barry Chamberlin
T. Barrett "Barry" Chamberlin Jr.
Founder & CEO
Co-Founded Barrett · Est. 1987

Thomas B. "Barry" Chamberlin, Jr. is the founder and CEO of The Barrett Companies, founded alongside his late father, Thomas "Buck" Chamberlin, Sr. A certified land surveyor with deep expertise in civil engineering, land planning, and real estate development, Barry has spent nearly 50 years building more than 100 high-end homes and select commercial projects throughout Northern Virginia, each shaped by his belief that every home should be built with the same care as if his own family would live there forever. He and his wife, Sharon, were high school sweethearts and have been married more than 49 years, raising four sons — Taylor, Bradshaw, and Milton now carry the Barrett legacy forward alongside him. Outside of work, Barry is an avid golfer and 45+ year member of Washington Golf and Country Club, where he served as Club President in 2013, and at home in Arlington he can often be found cooking, smoking barbecue, or spending time with family.

Common Questions

We've Got Answers.

The questions we hear most often — answered plainly so you know exactly what to expect before you call.

Custom Homes, Renovation & GC
Are you the least expensive option? +
No — and we're upfront about that. We won't be the lowest bid you receive. But in over 35 years and $200M+ in projects across Northern Virginia, we've never had a client who chose Barrett on price. They chose us on reputation, on quality, and on trust — and every one of them will tell you it was the best decision they made. If your primary criteria is lowest cost, we're probably not the right fit. If your criteria is a home or project you'll be proud of for generations, we'd love to talk.
What makes a Barrett home different from other builders? +
Most people assume all new construction is essentially the same. It isn't. The difference starts before a single shovel goes in the ground — in how the lot is evaluated, how the foundation is engineered, and how every structural system is detailed. We build from a land planning background that most builders don't have, and we build to a standard we'd want in our own homes. Production builders build to margin. We build to reputation. Those are two very different things, and you can feel it in the finished product.
What does the custom home process look like from start to finish? +
It starts with a conversation — understanding what you want, what lot or site you have in mind, and what your budget is. From there we move through land evaluation, design development (working with your architect or ours), permit submission, and into construction. During the build you'll have weekly updates and a single point of contact throughout. The process typically runs 12–18 months from design kick-off to certificate of occupancy, depending on scope. We'll give you a realistic timeline — not an optimistic one — at the outset so you can plan accordingly.
How does your land use and planning background affect the homes you build? +
Our family has been in professional land use and planning since T. Barrett "Buck" Chamberlin Sr. ran Delashmutt Associates — one of the region's respected land planning firms. That means when we evaluate a lot, we're not just thinking about what fits on it today. We're thinking about drainage patterns, orientation, setback implications, future development in the surrounding area, and long-term resale characteristics. Most builders buy a lot and build a house. We evaluate a site the way a planner does — and that shapes everything from the placement of the home to the way the lot is graded. Buyers feel that difference in value over time.
How do I choose finishes and make design decisions? +
We guide you through it — that's part of what you're hiring us for. We'll walk you through finish selections at a pace that works for you, with clear deadlines for each decision so they don't hold up construction. We work with preferred suppliers who give our clients access to trade-only materials and pricing, and our project team will flag when a selection might affect your timeline or budget before you commit to it. Most clients find the process more enjoyable than they expected — we just want decisions made in the right sequence so the build moves smoothly.
How long does a kitchen renovation take? +
Most kitchen renovations in the $75K–$150K range take 8–14 weeks from demo to completion. The timeline depends primarily on lead times for cabinetry and countertops — we order those immediately after contract signing to prevent delays. We'll give you a specific timeline in your written scope.
Do you handle permits, or do I need to? +
We handle all permits — that's part of our service. Navigating Fairfax County and Arlington County permitting is something we do every week. You don't need to visit a permitting office, fill out forms, or follow up on approvals. We manage it start to finish.
What's your minimum project size? +
For general contracting and smaller scope work, we typically start at $25,000. For kitchen renovations our starting budget is around $75,000. Detached garages start at $90,000. If your project is below these thresholds, we're happy to refer you to a trusted partner.
Do we need to move out during a renovation? +
For most kitchen and bathroom renovations, you can stay in the home — we work in a defined zone and maintain a clean, contained workspace daily. For whole-floor or whole-home renovations, temporary relocation is often more practical and we can discuss what makes sense for your specific project.
How do I know the final cost won't balloon? +
We provide a detailed, itemized written contract before any work begins. We price projects thoroughly upfront so surprises are rare. The most common source of cost increases is owner-requested changes mid-project — we document these with a written change order and get your approval before proceeding. No silent additions.
Do you work in my neighborhood? +
Our primary service area is Great Falls (22066), McLean (22101, 22102), and Arlington (22201–22209). We also serve surrounding Fairfax County communities on a case-by-case basis — call us and we'll let you know right away if we're the right fit for your location.
Commercial & General
How quickly can you turn around a commercial bid? +
For tenant improvement and QSR projects where drawings are provided, we typically turn around a preliminary bid within 5–7 business days. For projects requiring a site visit before bidding, 7–10 business days. We understand commercial timelines are tight and we treat bid turnaround as a priority.
Are you on any preferred vendor lists? +
We hold a Virginia Class A Contractor license, are fully bonded (up to $5M), and carry the insurance levels required by major REITs and commercial brokers. We have our pre-qualification documentation ready for JLL, CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield, and national QSR brand programs. Contact us and we'll send our full qualifications package.
Do you do QSR work with national chains? +
Yes — we have experience with brand-standard buildouts for national quick-service restaurant chains and understand the approval process involved with corporate construction departments. We work from brand-provided drawings and specs and are familiar with the documentation and milestone reporting these programs require.
What's the consultation process like? +
All consultations are free and carry zero obligation. For residential projects, we typically do a 30-minute call followed by a site visit. For commercial projects, we start with a brief call to understand scope and timeline, then schedule a site walk with our estimator. You'll have a written proposal in hand before any decisions are needed.
How does financing work for renovations? +
We have established banking relationships that can facilitate renovation financing — including home equity-based lending and construction draw structures. Many homeowners in Great Falls and McLean have substantial equity they haven't tapped. We can connect you directly with our lending contacts to explore what makes sense for your project budget.
Are you licensed and insured? +
Yes, fully. We hold a Virginia Class A Contractor license, carry general liability insurance, workers' compensation coverage, and are bonded. We're happy to provide certificates of insurance to any client, lender, or property manager that requires them — just ask and we'll send them same day.

Don't see your question answered here? Call us directly — we're happy to talk through any project, big or small, with no obligation.

Project Financing

Your Dream Project
Is More Attainable
Than You Think.

Many homeowners in Great Falls and McLean are sitting on substantial equity they haven't thought about using. A $120,000 kitchen renovation or a $95,000 detached garage doesn't have to come from cash reserves — there are smart, low-rate ways to fund it.

We have long-standing banking relationships specifically for renovation and construction financing. We'll introduce you to the right lender, help you understand your options, and make sure financing never becomes the reason a great project doesn't happen.

Home Equity (HELOC)
Use your existing equity at typically lower rates. Most common for $75K–$300K renovation budgets.
Construction Loans
Draw-based financing tied to project milestones. Ideal for large additions, garages, and custom builds.
Personal & Renovation Loans
Unsecured renovation financing for smaller-scope projects. Fast approval, no equity required.
Preferred Lender Introductions
We'll connect you with lenders who specialize in renovation and new construction in Northern Virginia.
